1. Out and about "I met my girlfriend while standing in
line at the bank," laughs Edna, 40, from Queens. "You just never know, so it's
worth it to pay attention no matter where you are."
Look around next time you're in the coffee house; you might be surprised who's
there with you.
2. Film and book festivals "I've met several people at
small film festivals," says Nancy, 27, of Los Angeles. "I find someone who
appeals to me and try to get behind them in line or sit next to them. After
that, there's plenty to talk about."
These events are great places to meet someone whose interests are similar to
yours. Tip: Many bookstores have book groups devoted to lesbian literature,
and film festivals have gay and lesbian-themed nights — making it even easier
to find your match.
3. Online "I've got a busy job and don't really enjoy the bar
scene," says Cynthia, 34, of Chicago. "I've found it's faster and easier to
meet women online. There are some good chat rooms and, of course, online
dating communities. It's much better for me with my crazy schedule."
4. Classes Why not improve yourself while looking for your
ideal mate? Janna, 29, of San Francisco, let her search for higher learning
lead her to love. "I was taking a French class and kept seeing Sue waiting for
her Spanish class," she says. "After a couple of times, we started talking in
English, and the rest is history."
5. Volunteer work "I'd just about given up meeting anybody,"
recalls Dale, 36, from Tallahassee. "So I decided to put my energy into other
people and started volunteering as a peer counselor at the Gay & Lesbian
Center, where I ended up meeting my girlfriend."
You don't have to limit yourself to gay and lesbian organizations. You could
easily meet your match volunteering at a state park or working a booth at a
street fair.
6. Cruising "I was skeptical when my friends suggested a lesbian
cruise," says Anne, 47, of Rochester. "It sounded so cheesy. But it was
actually a lot of fun, and I met several promising women whom I've kept up
with since."
7. Social groups Some women are willing to take a more proactive
approach. "Here in Portland," says Rochelle, 30, "someone proposed a 'Dyke
Night Out' at local clubs to propagate a meet-and-greet. Now that I'm out of a
relationship, I kind of wish I'd looked into it."
